Energy sector companies commended in recent awards

By Neil Ritchie

Two “home grown” Taranaki companies that initially concentrated on the region’s energy industry were both highly commended in the recent TSB-Taranaki Chamber of Commerce 2017 Business Excellence Awards.

Oakura-based Spill Control NZ was highly commended in Category A of the Small Business Excellence Award section of the competition, while New Plymouth’s SafetySolutions was highly commended in Category B of the Service Excellence Award section.

In seven years Spill Control NZ has gone from distributing imported spill kits, products and equipment, to designing and assembling its own specialised spill equipment and selling this to oil and gas operators, oil refinery owners, ports, emergency services and local authorities.

“We are proud to based in Taranaki and still managing to grow the business, providing services the length of the country, from Northland to Invercargill. So it’s great to be recognised for our efforts, being highly commended in the category for small sized businesses,” said Spill Control NZ director Jason Sole.

Safety Solutions, established about five years ago, has also diversified and grown in recent times, increasing the number of sectors it services, the number of clients it has, in major industrial sectors, including oil and gas, dairy, geothermal, power, pulp and paper and chemicals, both here and overseas.

“Our focus to the panel of judges was our overall contribution to the New Zealand industries we work in and we were very pleased to be highly commended in the category for medium sized businesses,” said managing director Paul Feltoe.
