O&G Regions & the ultimate lifestyle

Taranaki – New Zealand’s foremost energy province

Taranaki is New Zealand’s foremost energy region and home to around 90 percent of the New Zealand industry.

From the discovery of oil in Taranaki in 1865, this region has evolved to become the hub of the nation’s oil and gas activity. All of New Zealand’s commercially developed and producing fields are located in Taranaki, as well as the majority of infrastructure, and the industry’s supply chain, knowledge and experience. The province offers an enviable lifestyle and a location that welcomes and supports the industry and its people.

National and international companies are exploring in Taranaki. Their employees and the nation's supply chain enjoy a great working environment and a lifestyle to match with coastal walkways, surfing and skiing, affordable housing and city amenities.

Taranaki is also home to thriving engineering, dairying, tourism and primary and food production industries, and boasts a varied landscape punctuated by the conical Mount Taranaki and fringed by a vibrant coastline.

Industry connections

A range of O&G industry organisations have been created in recent years to foster growth and networking, including:

  • New Zealand Petroleum Club: an invitation only operator forum with a focus on information sharing and networking. Venture Taranaki has been a foundation sponsor of the Club.
  • Oil and Gas Specialist Technologies Cluster: a multi-disciplined group of New Zealand companies providing a range of technical specialist and support services to the oil, gas and energy sectors. This group is facilitated by Venture Taranaki Trust.

  • New Zealand Society of Engineers: Based in New Plymouth, NZ’s oil and gas hub, 100 share technical information sharing at lunchtime gatherings, networking (including an annual golf tournament and social evenings), and general efforts to enhance the future of New Zealand's petroleum engineering resource base through the growth and management of our Scholarship Trust fund targeted at engineering students.
  • Venture Taranaki: Taranaki's regional development agency is extensively involved in the growth and development of the O&G industry and also undertakes functions in relation to business development across all other sectors, regional tourism, events and marketing.
  • Port Taranaki: New Zealand's prime depwater oil and gas port.
  • Taranaki local body councils
